BERND BUDER – Selector of the Official selection and CineBalkan program

2015. We should talk. Films should talk. About the state of humanity, society, history. About personal experiences, hopes and traumata. About a world in turmoil, thousands of people on the move – about one world which is divided into different planets, even if people live as neighbors in the same street or cross each other’s ways. We should talk about curiosity towards “the others“, towards different experiences, different concepts of life, different hopes, and different motivations. Film talks about these topics, draws the attention to the hopes, longings, disappointments, destinies of our neighbors, and builds up curiosity – for the hidden secrets which undermine mutual trust. Digs up, explains those secrets, most often in a personal way: the programme of these year’s “Cinedays“ is not about big crisis, it is about the small worlds we normally live in: share it with “Goat“, the grumpy Slovak boxer with the big heart, with the crew of the Maltese fisher boat “Simshar“ which has to fight the force of nature, with the couple in “Beyond Here“ which tries to survive a winter all alone in the Alps, with the teenage girl in “The World Is Mine“ who desperately looks for her place in the society and her own life. Films communicate diverse approaches towards life, we love to be entertained by those kinds of diversity, and, in the end, to become more curious in this diversity. Enjoy this curiosity and its two brothers: empathy and your own point of view – the three of them are good tools to survive, and film is a perfect means to discuss them.
